Anyone shipping a classic car, sports car or hypercar eventually runs into the same question: enclosed or open car transport? The answer has less to do with price. and more to do with what you cannot see until the car arrives at its destination.
We have been moving vehicles exclusively in enclosed specialist transporters since 1991. Here is what the difference looks like in practice, and when an open transport really is still an option.
Protection
Full vs. exposed
Enclosed: no stone chips, no rain, no UV, no curious eyes. Open: your vehicle is exposed to everyday road traffic the entire route.
Cost
30-50 % cheaper?
Open transport really is cheaper. But: a single stone chip on a Hypercar bonnet costs more in paint repair than the entire premium charge.

What open car transport actually means in practice
The classic format: a multi-level open trailer with several vehicles loaded at once. This is the method that moves new cars from factories across Europe every day. and it is perfectly fine for series-production vehicles without collector status.
For premium vehicles three things become problematic. First, weather and road dirt stick to paint, wheels and underbody throughout the trip. Second, stone chips. especially on the upper deck. Third: every onlooker can see what is on board. For prototypes, press cars and hypercars that is a non-starter.
What enclosed car transport gives you
Our Mercedes Actros specialist transporters are fully enclosed box trucks. The vehicle enters a climate-controlled, lockable cargo space, gets secured with individual rail and strap systems, and does not see daylight again until unloading at destination. Air-suspended, individually ventilated, with photo documentation at pickup and delivery.
The four factors that determine the right choice
Vehicle value
Rule of thumb: at a market value above ~30,000 €, enclosed transport pays for itself on insurance grounds alone. For classics, hypercars and collector items it is the only option anyway.
Paint condition & patina
Original paint, fresh restoration, flawless clear coat? Every stone chip cuts value and originality. Open transport is not an option here.
Discretion
Prototypes, press cars, hypercars: the transport must be invisible. Enclosed = no one sees what is inside. Open = every smartphone becomes a camera.
Route & weather
1,500 km of motorway in mid-summer? Scandinavia in February? An enclosed transport keeps the vehicle in a controlled environment. Open exposes it to whatever the road delivers.

Rule of thumb from the Classic Car Service dispatch desk
Above 30,000 € vehicle value. go enclosed.
From this value upward, enclosed transport justifies the surcharge purely on insurance, paint condition and resale value. For classics, hypercars and prototypes the rule is simple: enclosed only.
Which transport for which vehicle?
We move vehicles exclusively in enclosed transporters. because our clients ship classics, sports cars, hypercars, prototypes and press cars. These are exactly the vehicles where stone chips, loss of patina or indiscretion translate into measurable economic damage.
If you are shipping a standard new car from a dealer to a neighbouring city, open transport is completely fine. If value preservation, insurability or confidentiality matter, the car belongs in an enclosed specialist transporter.
Checklist: how to recognise a serious enclosed car transport provider
These six points should be confirmed in writing before you place an order. no matter who the provider is.
Own fleet, no subcontractors
If a provider works with subcontractors, no one can guarantee the next leg is actually enclosed.
Comprehensive insurance with adequate coverage
Standard freight liability does not cover six-figure vehicle values. Have the insurer's coverage amount confirmed in writing.
Photo documentation at pickup and delivery
Complete condition documentation protects both sides. Professionals do this as standard.
Trained drivers. not generic truckers
Loading a hypercar with a locking differential or a pre-war classic without power steering requires specific know-how.
Clear handover protocols & a dedicated contact
Anonymous hubs and rotating dispatchers are warning signs. A single point of contact from inquiry to handover is standard.
TISAX compliance for OEM and prototype transports
Anyone moving prototypes or press cars must work to TISAX standards and be able to prove it on request.
Enclosed transport is never expensive. it is only more expensive than a mistake you did not want to make.
