What does a car transport cost? The honest answer: it depends. And in this case that is not a sales tactic. it is the reality. Route, vehicle type, loadability, insured value. five factors shape the price. We show which ones, where we typically land, and how you spot a serious quote.
Main cost drivers
Distance + vehicle type
Every kilometer costs diesel, labour and tolls. The vehicle type decides whether a standard transporter is fine or whether an enclosed, climate-controlled specialist truck with locked-differential securing is required.
Hidden cost
Insurance & dwell time
Cheap providers price without adequate insurance coverage or with subcontractors that add dwell-time surcharges later. Pros price all of this in from day one.

The five price drivers of professional car transport
Distance and routing
The primary variable. Enclosed specialist transports inside the EU run at roughly 1.80-2.80 € per kilometre, with international routes including Brexit customs or third-country handling correspondingly higher.
Vehicle type & value
A 320 km/h hypercar requires different securing than a pre-war classic on wooden-spoke wheels. The special securing mass needed flows into the price.
Loadability
Can the car drive in or does it need winching? Lowered sports cars, barn finds or steering-damage vehicles require more time and specialist equipment.
Time window
Express or same-day transports are more expensive than groupage with 5-10 days of flexibility. Anyone who can plan dates saves money with any provider.
Insurance coverage
Above 250,000 € vehicle value the freight insurance must explicitly be topped up. That has a cost. and it is non-negotiable.

What a sample route actually costs
Concrete numbers, enclosed specialist transport with our own Mercedes Actros fleet, as of 2026. prices are net guideline figures, individual setups will vary.
Stuttgart → Munich (220 km, classic car ~€80,000)
Classic domestic route. Enclosed transport: 750-950 € net, including photo documentation and standard insurance.
Stuttgart → Milan (~640 km, hypercar ~€1.8M)
International transport with topped-up insurance. Enclosed, climate-controlled: 2,400-3,200 € net.
Stuttgart → London (UK, Brexit customs, ~1,250 km)
Third-country transport since Brexit. Including full customs handling: 3,800-4,800 € net.
Rule of thumb Classic Car Service
Below 1,000 € intra-EU. unrealistic for serious enclosed transport.
Anyone offering you 600 € for a 300 km enclosed transport with adequate insurance is either pricing with questionable subcontractors or planning to charge extras later. Both end up more expensive than a fair upfront price.
Domestic, EU, third country. where the prices diverge
Domestic routes are easy to calculate: kilometres, tolls, diesel, labour. Inside the EU you add Schengen logistics. no customs, but country-specific toll systems, cabotage rules and varying safety standards at fuel stops and rest areas.
Third countries (UK since Brexit, Switzerland, Turkey, Morocco, USA, UAE, Japan) require full customs handling with export declarations, EUR.1 certificates or carnet ATA depending on the case. That is not arbitrary cost. it is clean process work that effectively replaces a risk-of-penalty premium.
Checklist: how to spot a serious quote
These points belong in every serious quote for enclosed vehicle transport.
Clear split: transport price, tolls, insurance surcharge
Lump-sum quotes usually invite later add-ons. A clean breakdown is part of the deal.
Insurance coverage in writing
Have the coverage amount confirmed in writing for your specific vehicle. Standard freight liability is not enough for hypercars.
Own fleet explicitly stated
The line "We use our own Mercedes Actros specialist transporters" belongs explicitly in the quote. No mention of subcontracting = no guarantee of enclosed transport.
Photo documentation defined as a deliverable
At pickup and delivery, documented in writing. Standard for pros, missing at cheap providers.
Fixed time window with penalty clause
If timing matters (auction, event, press launch), a time guarantee including a contractual penalty must be part of the deal.
Dedicated contact with a direct number
No anonymous call centre. One specific person with a direct number from inquiry to handover.
The most expensive car transport is the one where someone has to pay again afterwards. usually the customer.
